A gentle giant and the girl who raised her are caught in the crossfire between animal activism, corporate greed and scientific ethics.
Why We’re Excited:
Aside from a cast jam-packed with amazing folks, director Bong Joon Ho has been at the helm of some of our favorite movies for the last ten years or so, including The Host (2006) and Snowpiercer (2013). All of Bong’s films thus far have been chock-full of beautiful visuals, bizarre concepts, and spectacular characters – and from our early looks, Okja will be no different.
Despite the exciting concept, Okja has already stood up against a bit of hullabaloo, with some of the French viewers at the Cannes film festival (where it was one of two films Netflix put up for competition) were upset that the film would be considered if it wasn’t set for theatrical release.
Bong shrugged at the controversy saying: “All films are eventually archived in DVDs, Blu-rays and in other digital media after screening in theaters for a while. Considering that as all films’ life cycle, I don’t think making a film backed by Netflix makes much difference for me as a filmmaker,” in an interview with Variety last month.
Regardless, we are absolutely elated to finally be getting a movie about a giant pig-hippo-thing. I mean, why has this not been a thing yet?
